Bath salt bombs make an absolutely fantastic gift. Don’t head to the store and pick some up, though. This is something that is rather simple to make in the comfort of your own home.
What You Need
These ingredients should be more than enough to make several bath bombs. Of course, you can also increase the number of ingredients you use if you want to make more bath bombs at once. Just make sure that you keep the proportions in line with one another e.g. if you doubled the baking soda, you would double every other ingredient:
- 2 Cups of Baking Soda
- Various food colorings
- 6 teaspoons of coconut oil
- 2 teaspoons of your selected essential oil
- 2 teaspoons of water
- 1 cup of citric acid
- 1 cup of Epsom salt
You will also need an electric mixer and a collection of special bath bomb molds. Don’t worry, these are not expensive, and they are complete reusable. If you wish, you could mix up various essential oils into the same bath bomb. However, just make sure that you do not go over the measurements on here. Here are some ideas for essential oil combinations:
- Lavender and Tea Tree Oil
- Orange, Peppermint and Lemongrass
- Lavender and Eucalyptus
How to Make the Bath Bombs
Making the bath salts is as easy as making homemade soap. The first step is to mix your citric acid, Epsom salt and citric acid together. This will need to be done using your electric mixer. This will preferably be a ‘freestanding mixer’. If you use one of the handheld electric whisks, it can be a touch more difficult to mix everything.
Once that has been mixed up properly, you should melt down your coconut oil. You can do this in the microwave, or over the stove. Mix your melted coconut oil up with the essential oils and the water. Add this mixture into the mixer and stir it lightly.
The final step for the creation of your bath bomb mixture is to add the food colorings. You will need a few drops here. Do not go overboard. Just enough to add a bit of color to everything. You can use whatever food colorings you want here, just make sure they are actually food colorings, no other coloring, otherwise it won’t be great for the bath.
Once you have done one final mix of everything, you will want to scoop the mixture out and add it to your bath bomb molds. You will want to ensure that everything is packed in very tightly. It will be quite a tough squeeze. If it is not tightly packed, then it will not set properly.
Now, all you need to do is let the bath bombs to set properly in the refrigerator. It should take about 24-hours. You will want to ensure that everything is nice and hard. If it is, then you can remove the bath bombs for the mold (it will take a light tap), and then you can hand them out as gifts.
